Growing plants without soil has been experimented with for centuries from ancient Chinese water gardens to English greenhouse experiments in the 1630s.

The word hydroponic is derived from the Greek words hydro and ponic. Hydro means water and ponic means labor. Hydroponic refers to the growing of plants in a liquid nutrient mixture without using soil.
